Blood clots are life-saving when you stop your bleeding, but they can (form ) when they aren’t needed and cause a heart attack, ( stroke ), lung damage and death.
Venous thromboembolism or VTE is when a clot ( forms ) in a deep vein usually in the leg, then (travels ) to the lungs and ( blocks ) blood supply.
VTE ( affects ) around 600,000 Americans each year.
You are at risk as you (age) and if you’ve had recent surgery, a serious injury or been ( still ) for long time from a hospital stay, bed rest or travel,
also if you have a personal or family history of deep (vein) (clots), smoke or are overweight.
Seek medical attention if you ( experience) swelling, pain or tenderness, or warmth and redness. (0:43)
If you have sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or ( cough ) ( up ) (blood ),
call 911 immediately.
The good news is that VTE can be ( prevented ) and (treated).
